The Flame Cafe 4 Tier Pagoda Steamboat

If I only had to eat 1 type of meal for the rest of my life, what would it be? HOT POT!!! Not sure if I'm supposed to pick a specific type of ingredient but if there's a choice I would gladly choose hotpot (and probably become fat from it too). I searched online for affordable steamboat restaurants and found out about The Flame Cafe - which serves a 4 tier Pagoda steamboat with cheesy dip to satisfy your mookata or steamboat cravings. Is it worth it? Read more to find out!

There's 3 different levels to choose from the Pagoda buffet - Deluxe ($19.90), Premium ($29.90) and Supreme ($38.90). You can view their menu below.

It was fully booked when we reached the restaurant, but lucky for us , we made a reservation at 830pm. The place is located near Taiseng MRT and I also had direct bus to the place.

Do take note that Flame Cafe is also halal certified!

We went for the Premium Buffet as anything below wasn't worth it and anything above was too expensive. I think we made the right choice as we ended up spamming the seafood in the end. The meat selection is pretty decent but given the lack of space, there was a mini crowd at the buffet counter. Small issue though as I noticed that they refill the portions sufficiently.

For premium buffet, we can choose 2 soup bases and we picked the Chicken and Tom Yam (our standards). The soup was quite delicious, not top notch quality but enough to keep me addicted for a good whole 2 hours. The chicken soup is in a milky white type instead of a clear base (something that I prefer). Another bonus point.

Talking about convenience of cooking, i find it a little challenging to cook the food as the tiers seem to be blocking each other. The food also sticks on the aluminium foil quite a bit.

2 fresh oysters were included in our buffet for the premium selection too.

As for food quality, you just cannot expect too much. It was a hit and miss between some meat choices. I personally prefer to have the marinated chicken which is somewhat similar to Seoul Garden's style. After 1-2 rounds of beef and chicken, we targeted on spamming the seafood instead (More worth it!). We ordered the Crayfish in 10s as requested by bf. From the springy and bouncy texture, we could tell that the crayfish is fresher compared to other places that we have tried before.

The marinated squid was quite disappointing and we hardly finished any. Anyway it also looks like a pile of worms.. haha. We both prefer the cute little squids which is more springy and fresh. I couldn't bring myself to eat a second piece after trying one.

I was quite upset when we were told that the aluminium foil cannot be changed after it has been burnt. Apparently, we were supposed to finish dining within 2 hours and they refused to change the burnt foil. There is no problem with limiting the dining time, but we felt that this could be informed at the start as many BBQ restaurants allow changing of the hot plate. The service standards dropped after we dined for 2 hours as well. Not sure if it's just a coincidence but they stopped refilling our soup, and took quite long to attend to us when we called for the staff.

Just a short rant here, with the substandard service with okay sort of food, I doubt I will return again. But the restaurant is still packed with people and it's highly recommended to make a reservation if you are interested in trying it out.

They also offer a DIY pizza corner which could be quite an interesting activity for the younger adults! We did not try it though.

Easy & Affordable Printing with Gogoprint | Monice Bakes

Branding is always important for any businesses and I have been looking for cheap and good printing services in Singapore. Unfortunately, most of the quotations that I received were way beyond my budget. Maybe they print on gold, but the prices really don't justify for a small business like mine. Thankfully, there is Gogoprint Singapore which offers sticker printing services at almost half the prices compared to the rest of the companies I have searched online!

Gogoprint provides printing services for a variety of business materials such as business cards, digital booklets, stickers, calendars, flyers, gift vouchers, posters, etc.

No joke, but I was genuinely surprised about the affordability. I can already foresee myself ordering business materials from them in the future, in fact I have already ordered once for my vouchers in collaboration with a school.

Gogoprint also sent me some physical samples of the different materials when I was in doubt about which type of stickers to order - simili or mirrorcoat.

In case you have the same question too, here's a simple explanation - Simili paper is more natural like a normal paper and you can also write on it easily, whereas Mirrorcoat paper is slightly more glossy and has the shine, more suitable for brand stickers in my opinion.

I ordered the 3 x 3cm in mirrorcoat (Full colour on front) with no finishing and placed on A4 sheet.
TOTAL = $51.40

1000 = $49.30
2000 = $51.40

I think we clearly know which is more worth it right? And $50+ for 2000 pieces is really really cheap!

The ordering process is rather fuss-free and convenient too! It's pretty much self explanatory from the photo below. Select your format, material type, finishing, sticker shape, etc etc.

If you require a rushed delivery, just click on the preferred date with your preferred quantity to check what is the total quotation.

To ensure timely delivery, you have to check that your artwork fulfils the basic requirements and is in the correct image format. On my side, I emailed Gogoprint customer service to double check the quality of the image before I send it out for printing. Kudos to them for being so helpful!

The stickers are really useful for my individual cookie bags as it acts as a advertising material for me when my customers give out these cookies to their friends/colleagues. And of course, it is also a representative of my brand - Monice Bakes! I haven't tried ordering name cards from Gogoprint as I still have a huge stack to use up. But I saw their sample namecards and I think the quality is decent for the price.

Find out more about their printing services on their website!

Thank you Gogoprint for the collaboration!

Movie Review: Happy Death Day (SPOILERS at the bottom)

"Die, live, and repeat" is such a simple plot idea, but it is not really easy to make the story plot such a successful one. Trailers seldom leave me such a strong impression, but Happy Death Day was kept at the back of my mind because sadistically, I really love the idea that she had to painstakingly find out the killer behind all this mystery.

For those who are afraid of gory movies, there is minimal gore and violence as every single kill pretty much caused a quick death for Tree. The story plot is simple but I thought there wasn't any boring moments and I was kept captivated throughout the movie.

The baby mask is also really sinister-looking and creepy.

Happy Death Day is one of the best thriller movies I've watched since the longest time. Will I watch it again now that the twist has been revealed? Maybe.. just to analyse the killer from the start till the end. But seriously, it's a damn good thriller, bet you wouldn't disagree right?

Don't scroll down if you have not watched the movie yet!!!

Throughout the movie, it didn't occur to me that Lori was the killer. I was probably too focused on all the jump scares and intensity of the plot that I failed to realize it made perfect sense for Lori to be the one behind all these killing. Were you able to guess who is the killer?

1. Tree never treated Lori well from the start. She was such a mean bitchy roommate, and prolly to everyone else.

2. Lori was pretending to be really nice to Tree even though she was such a mean bitch. In reality, will there be someone so forgiving? Maybe yes, but it's rare.

3. Now that I recalled, there was a major giveaway clue in the explosion scene where the killer ignited the car fuel with a birthday candle. And guess who else uses candles in the whole story plot? Lori with her never-ending birthday cupcakes. Can't believe that didn't occur to me at all.

4. Lori was one of the few possible suspects that could hide in Tree's bathroom when she tried to lock herself in the room to stay safe. I mean, who else could have easy access and be aware of her whereabouts the entire time. Who else could be more suspicious than her roommate?

5. Another obvious clue - Lori works in the hospital where she would have easy access to the release of the serial killer.

The only question that left me pondering... why was Tree granted unlimited lives to solve her own murder? This question was never addressed till the end and I could only assume that she was lucky enough and also given a chance to correct her wrongs.

I also love the happy ending which gave my heart a mini drop when I thought that she had to restart her day again after Lori was killed. Turned out that it's just a harmless prank played by Carter.

Happy Death Day!

Platform 1094 | Wizard Theme Cafe for the Harry Potter fans out there

Hello Kitty Cafe, Superhero Cafe, Gudetama Cafe, and many more. Singapore has recently caught up with the cartoon cafe trends and more restaurants with unique character themes are seen sprouting up everywhere. If you are not into the cutesy girly themes, why not try out the magical wizardry cafe - Platform 1094 in the heartland of Serangoon?

I was deciding between a Superhero or "Harry Potter" themed cafe to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday, but decided on the latter as I have also not visited this place before, and yes I want to take videos of their signature cocktail drink! #hiddenmotive #stillasurprise

I tried to make a booking beforehand but reservations are only allowed at certain timings and there was a private event at 3pm. Thankfully, we only waited about 10-15 minutes before getting a table. The cafe is a little small hence there may be some constraints in taking photos especially if you are taking a small table. No complaints though!

Cafes/ Restaurants with interactive elements are really attractive, at least to me for sure. I love that there are props and figurines available at the shelf to complement your food photography. Kids will probably be fascinated with the wands as they can pretend being a wizard. I thought that the wand props are really cute even though they are not part of the Harry Potter wand series.

Platform 1094 menu:

The Goblet of Fire ($15; contains alcohol) is a recommended choice, not for the taste but the novelty. Once again, if you can play with the food, it's a yes for me.

My bf find the drink very normal and nothing impressive. The drink is ignited with a blowtorch before we shake in cinnamon powder to create the sparks and flames. It is definitely insta-worthy, but is it worth  $15? That depends on your priorities. For me it's a yes, but I will only order it once.

Wild Mushroom Soup ($9) was slightly high on the price tag but it was the best dish of the day. In the first place, the cauldron already won my heart. The ingredients were perfectly balanced with the right amount of thickness, taste and texture, with real mushroom bits. I'm a fan of truffle oil and mushroom soups go really well with truffle. In fact, this was one of the better mushroom soups I have ever tried.

I ordered the Crab Meat Aglio Olio ($17) and bf had the Labanese Grilled Chicken Pasta ($16). While we find the flavours unique compared to other cafes, the execution fell short of my expectations. I have to say they were really generous in the portion especially the flying fish roe. But with all the overall ingredients added together, I found the flavor too overpowering for my palate. I wish they could tone down the taste a little more.

I also find the lunch/brunch menu lacking in terms of variety, perhaps it would be a better choice to visit Platform 1094 for dinner when there are more meat choices on the menu.

I reserved their signature dessert - Bloodberry ($18; contains alcohol) to surprise my bf instead of a cake as I have already prepared a cake for him during dinner together with our friends.

Bloodberry includes 2 chocolate ball shells, 1 filled with yoghurt parfait, and the other with Hoegaarden Rosee mousse, topped with berry foam and honey caviar. From an unbiased perspective, $18 for fine dining desserts seem like a reasonable price to me, and the food plating was quite exquisite. Taste wise, I wouldn't say it impressed me much as the the flavours were not that noticeable.

Perhaps it's just us, but we would rather pay for the normal cake slices.

While the food isn't really to our liking, I personally feel that it is still worth a visit for the Harry Potter/ Wizard theme, especially if you are really into character or themed cafes. The staff managing the Facebook was really helpful in sending me information about the desserts and helping me arrange the surprise!

Media Invite: Golden Autumn Celebrations @ RWS

Did you have a great Mid Autumn Festival last week? The festive celebration isn't over yet at RWS, and if you are finding new activities to spend some quality time with your family, you can consider heading to Golden Autumn Celebrations - A 3D Light, Lanterns, Food and Entertainment Festival to enjoy a fun evening together! (Opened till 12 November 2017)

Get ready to be treated to beautiful lanterns brought in from Chengdu (成都), with a spectacular 3D light show on a 12 metres high giant porcelain vase structure. Skip your usual dinner and head in for a hearty meal as free-flow food will be included in your entry fee! Sichuan delicacies are prepared by invited chefs.

Mid-autumn illumination magic is spread across 3 different zones - China Fantasy, Silk Road Fantasy and Childhood Fantasy.
The most attractive segment about this event is the exciting cultural life performance which includes puppet, martial arts, stunt performances and more. It's something not to be missed! Some of the stunts such as the cup tossing were quite impressive to watch. You get to witness Shaolin monks displaying their martial art skills in this 45 min performance too.

Show Timing: 6:30pm-7:15pm and 8:30pm-9:15pm.

The China Fantasy zone includes instagram-worthy lantern pieces that are inspired by renowned Chinese icons such as porcelain vases, the iconic cute panda character, and ancient Chinese architecture including the ancient palace.

Unfortunately, my family missed the 3D light show which is a five-minute performance depicting the endearing classic tale of Moon Goddess Chang’e (嫦娥) and her beloved husband Hou Yi (后羿).

I have to take a photo with 财神爷 for more luck to my business!

The Childhood Fantasy Zone diplay light lanterns that represent the 12 Zodiacs. My brother also made me recite my little "Zodiac poem" which was etched in my head for probably more than 15 years of my life ever. It's the easiest way to memorize the sequence of each zodiac animal. Oh but don't ask me about the origin of each animal, I cannot remember at all.

Here it goes:

一鼠,二牛,三虎,四兔,五龙,六蛇,七马,八羊,九猴,十鸡,十一狗,十二猪跟着走

There are also true-to-life dinosaur figures that tower over six metres high which could interest young kids more. This fantasy-like play area also includes an interactive LED dance floor and LED swings to ensure that your kids do not feel left out.

Not kids anymore, but my brother and I were quite excited about the LED swings. #childhood

Silk Road Fantasy zone brings to life the historical journey across China’s vast landscape where trade discoveries and cultural exchanges meet at the crossroads. The most beautiful structure in this zone is the pair of Swan lanterns which looks really elegant and pretty.
